The Red Sox Are Screwed
So you have the best record in baseball and have lead the AL East since April, what do you do in September? Collapse like a fat man on a hot day with a tight neck tie. The Sox are now only 1.5 games ahead of the Evil Empire, and 7 games ahead of the nearest wild card contender, Detroit, so the Sox will probably still make the post season. But who cares? If they get there playing like this, they won't be there for long. The Yanks are peaking just when they need to, the Sox are playing like a bunch of guys who think they can snooze until October. Two words of advice numb-nuts: Wakey Wakey!

The Sox were down three games to none and trailing 4-3 entering the ninth inning of game 4. No team in history had ever come back from a 3-0 deficit. (Game 3, by-the-way, had been a 19-8 rout at Fenway.) Mariano Rivera, probably the greatest closer in baseball history, was on the mound for the Yanks. He hadn't issued a walk in post-season play since 2001...

There was a guy at work - a Yankee fan - when the Sox looked to be on the ropes, he got really obnoxious. He wasn't usually like that. I guess the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry got to him that way. I remember thinking: some guys are sore losers, this guy's a sore winner! Anyway, after game three he got in my face about it and I decided right then and there I wasn't going to give an inch until I HAD to. If they lost, I had all winter to feel like crap. I wasn't going to get a head start on it. In other words, I guess by being a jerk about it, that guy did me a big favor.
Yes, the Sox aren't where I want them to be right now but they're not far from where I want them to be. And they've been in much worse situations that came out well. And yes, they have to start playing better again. They will.
All true.
But that was then this is now, and right now with the way they are playing, I am not so sanguine.
You weren't so sanguine THEN either.
They are resting a lot of starters and putting some rookies in play. Being the wild card and rested would not be the worst. But I want a pennant damnit!
